Neurology & Neurosurgery
Neurology is a specialty dealing with disorders of the nervous system. This includes disorders of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord), peripheral nervous system (include the peripheral nerves, muscles and neuromuscular junction) and the autonomic nervous system.
Our Neurology/Neurosurgery team comprises of a specialist (Dr. Diane Lu), a veterinary neurology resident (Dr. Shanshan Guo) and a team of veterinary assistants dedicated to neurological patients.
Diagnostic procedures are available for the investigation of intracranial, spinal and neuromuscular disorders by use of:
- In-house advanced diagnostic imaging: 0.2 T and 1.5 T MRI (GE Signa Explorer), 16-slice spiral CT
- Digital radiography (myelography available in cases not suitable for MRI)
- 2-channel Cadwell Sierra Summit (electrodiagnostics such as EMG, MNCV, SNCV, RNS, BAER)
The advantage of in-house advanced equipment is to allow spinal surgery (severe cases) to be performed as soon as possible (very often immediately) following MRI/CT study, to relieve patient from neuropathic pain and improve their quality of life.
Our service provides neurosurgery for pets suffering from intervertebral disc prolapse, atlantoaxial subluxation, spinal trauma (fractures and luxations), intracranial diseases (brain tumour, hydrocephalus), and investigation and medication treatment for epilepsy, vestibular disorders, inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, to name a few.
In addition to providing acupuncture on our postoperative spinal patients, our team also work closely with our Physiotherapy service to ensure the best outcomes.
